Immediate Post-Procedure Care

The initial 24 hours after your wisdom teeth removal are important for the healing process. During this period, it's important to follow post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon.

To reduce swelling, apply ice for the initial 24 hours in 20-minute intervals. For the first hour after surgery, it's important to keep firm pressure on the surgical site with the gauze that was placed in your mouth after surgery. One hour after surgery you are able to remove the gauze. It is recommended to keep your head elevated either in a semi-reclined position or using pillows. Swelling usually reaches a maximum of 2 days following surgery.

Resume your diet immediately following surgery. Starting with a milkshake, smoothie, or other thick liquid using a spoon and not a straw, as this can lead to dry socket. Numbness from anesthesia may last for hours; therefore, hot foods and liquids should be avoided. Most foods can be eaten as long as precaution is taken to avoid the surgical sites. Following these instructions will help ensure a more comfortable healing period.

The First Week of Recovery From Wisdom Tooth Removal

With most oral surgery procedures, post-operative discomfort can actually worsen between the third and sixth days. This discomfort is considered normal and should be managed with your pain medication. It's important to continue with the oral hygiene routine recommended by Dr. Lehman or Menis, avoiding direct brushing on the extraction sites to prevent irritation. Vigorous exercise should not be resumed until 3-5 days after surgery or as condition allows.

Long-Term Healing and Care for Wisdom Teeth

While the majority of the recovery occurs within the first week, complete healing can take up to two weeks or longer, depending on individual factors like the complexity of the extraction. It's important to keep any follow-up appointments with your oral surgeon to make sure that the healing process is progressing as expected. Long-term care involves maintaining good oral hygiene and attending regular dental check-ups to protect your oral health.
